Abstract

This recommended practice provides standard procedures for determining the following characteristics of water-based drilling fluids:

1. a) drilling fluid density (mud weight);
2. b) viscosity and gel strength;
3. c) static filtration;
4. d) water, oil, and solids contents;
5. e) sand content;
6. f) methylene blue capacity;
7. g) pH;
8. h) alkalinity and lime content;
9. i) chloride content;
10. j) total hardness as calcium;
11. k) low-gravity solids and weighting material concentrations;
12. l) static filtration at high-temperature and high-pressure through permeability plugging testing.
