Description

Preface This is the sixth edition of CSA Z76.1, Reclosable child-resistant packages . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2016, 2006, 1999, 1990, and 1979. This Standard is restricted to reclosable packages. The Standard does not include packages with a non- child-resistant mode. This edition includes the following changes: a) general updates (e.g., references, terminology, and figures); b) updated child test result recording requirements; c) revision to the child-resistant testing site location requirements; and d) removal of the communication to the children allowing the use of teeth during child-resistant testing. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 General This Standard applies to packages for consumer products available in liquid or solid form that incorporate reclosable child-resistant features that restrict children’s ability to gain access to the contents of the packages. Such packages include (but are not limited to) packages with a continuous- thread, lug-finish, or snap closure. 1.2 Requirements This Standard includes requirements for the construction, performance, and marking of child-resistant packages, and for the instructions to be provided with such packages. 1.3 Testing This Standard specifies the minimum level of physical tests for ensuring that subsequent production lots comply with this Standard, including a) child-resistant effectiveness test; b) senior-adult-use effectiveness test; and c) senior-adult reclosing test. 1.4 Nonreclosable child-resistant packages This Standard does not apply to nonreclosable child-resistant packages or features. 1.5 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.6 Dual dimensions The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
