Description

Preface This is the first edition of CSA Z434.1, Use of industrial robot cells. It is part of a series of standards on industrial robots and robot systems . This Standard was jointly developed by CSA Group and the Association for Advancing Automation Robotics (A3). This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Industrial Robots and Robot Systems, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Occupational Health and Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Acknowledgement: The Association for Advancing Automation Robotics (A3) grants permission to CSA Group to use, reproduce, modify, publish, distribute, and translate ANSI/A3 R15.06-2025, Part 3 (Use of Industrial Robot Cells) in this Standard and create derivative work. CSA Group wishes to thank A3 for its support throughout the development of this Standard. Scope 1.1 General This Standard specifies safety requirements for users of industrial robot cells over the entire life cycle of the machinery. This Standard is supplementary to and used in conjunction with the requirements for industrial robots covered by Part 1 of CSA Z434, and requirements for the integration of industrial robot systems, applications, and cells covered by Part 2 of CSA Z434. Note: The user is responsible for the continued safe operation of robot applications and robot cells, and reduction of risk as stated in Part 2 of CSA Z434. Among other risk reduction measures described in this Standard, training or retraining of affected persons is an important part of risk reduction. 1.2 Exclusions When a manipulator is mounted to a mobile platform rather than permanently mounted in a single location, it is considered an industrial mobile robot and therefore not covered by this Standard. Note: See ANSI/A3 R15.08 for the safety requirements for an industrial mobile robot. 1.3 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.4 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
