Description

Preface This is the harmonized CSA Group and ULSE Standard for Power-Operated Dispensing Devices for Petroleum Products . It is the third edition of CSA B346, and the thirteenth edition of UL 87. This edition of CSA B346 supersedes the previous edition(s) published on December 1980 (Reaffirmed 2023). This edition of UL 87 supersedes the previous edition(s) published on March 24, 2016 and revised on September 4, 2019. The harmonized standard was prepared by CSA Group and ULSE under the jurisdiction of the CSA Transportation Strategic Steering Committee and has been formally approved by the Joint CSA B346 / UL 87 Technical Committee, TC 87-346J, Power-Operated Dispensing Devices for Petroleum Products. The efforts and support of the technical committee are gratefully acknowledged. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the standard. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of Natural Resources Canada. This Standard has been developed in compliance with the Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 These requirements apply to power-operated dispensing devices for petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel for use as motor fuel. 1.2 In the United States, the electrical features of power-operated dispensers are addressed in UL 1238, Standard for Control Equipment for Use with Flammable Liquid and LP-Gas Dispensing Devices. In Canada, the electrical features of flammable and combustible fuel dispensers are addressed in CSA C22.2 No. 22, Electrical equipment for flammable and combustible fuel dispensers. 1.3 These requirements apply to wiring methods used to install or interconnect such control equipment when the equipment is located directly on or within the housing of the dispensing device. These requirements do not apply to control equipment that can authorize, monitor, or interrupt operation of a power-operated dispensing device. Such equipment includes panel-mounted equipment located adjacent to the dispensing device, remote consoles located inside a permanent structure, and auxiliary equipment physically attached to the dispensing device or enclosed by the pedestal and housing. 1.4 Products covered by this Standard are intended to be installed and used in accordance with the applicable Codes and Regulations as determined by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), such as: a) In the United States: 1) NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code; 2) NFPA 30A, Code for Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and Repair Garages; 3) International Fire Code (IFC) Chapter 23; or 4) National Electrical Code® (NEC®), NFPA 70®. b) In Canada: 1) National Fire Code of Canada (NFC); 2) Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1; or 3) Provincial or other Regulations. NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code®, and NEC® are registered trademarks of the National Fire Protection Association, Quincy, MA. 1.5 For additional requirements for power-operated dispensing devices for gasoline/ethanol blends with nominal ethanol concentrations above 10 %, refer to the Standard for Power-Operated Dispensing Devices for Gasoline and Gasoline/Ethanol Blends with Nominal Ethanol Concentrations up to 98 Percent (E0 – E98). 1.6 For additional requirements for power-operated dispensing devices for biodiesel fuel, diesel/biodiesel blends with nominal biodiesel concentrations up to 20 % (B20), refer to the Standard for Power-Operated Dispensing Devices for Diesel Fuel, Biodiesel Fuel, Diesel/Biodiesel Blends with Nominal Biodiesel Concentrations Up to 20 Percent (B20), Kerosene, and Fuel Oil, UL 87B.
