The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF), An organization Inspired by Chanie Wenjack’s story and Gord Downie’s call to build a better Canada, aiming to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Our goal is to improve the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education, and connections between all peoples in Canada.
Esquao, the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW), is a non-profit organization that recognizes and celebrates the role, value, and achievements of Indigenous women in society and raises awareness around the challenges facing them.
The Windbreakers Indigenous Youth Running Program – offers weekly training and cultural-education sessions. It is open to Indigenous youth from grades 6 to 12 in the greater Edmonton area. The program runs from April to June, then from September to October annually. The program includes two training sessions per week with coaches, mentors, and Indigenous Elders/Knowledge Keepers. Participants can receive sponsorship for running gear and race fees. Running can lead to positive self-esteem; physical and mental health benefits; setting and achieving goals; post secondary scholarships.
