Description
Preface This is the first edition of CSA TS-103, Data sourcing protocol for agri-food performance — Part 1: Metadata . This Technical Specification (referred to as “this Document” from here on) provides a metadata schema to support consistent description, management, and sharing of datasets for the National Index on Agri-Food Performance and across the broader Canadian agri-food ecosystem. It supports assessment of dataset quality in accordance with CSA TS-104 and data governance practices as outlined in CSA TS-105. This Document is not a Standard and has not been formally approved by a CSA Technical Committee. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Document was made possible, in part, by the financial support of the Standards Council of Canada. This Document was prepared by the Development Subcommittee on Metadata, under the jurisdiction of the Data Sourcing Protocol Development Committee, and has been reviewed by the Development Committee. Scope 1.1 Metadata collection and framework for the National Index on Agri-Food Performance This Document supports best practices for collecting metadata for the National Index on Agri-Food Performance. This Document provides standardized descriptions for the collection and aggregation of agri-food data from trusted data providers, including normative terms and definitions of data, categorizations, and sourcing information that specifies the required and desirable metadata for data considered for the Index and included in the Index. This Document establishes a framework for a metadata self-declaration form for trusted data providers, detailing the necessary information for data sourcing and categorization for inclusion in the Index. This includes guidance on self-declaration management. This Document benefits interested parties by enhancing the reliability, transparency, and usability of the data included in the Index, as well as facilitating better decision-making and fostering trust in the agri-food data and metadata provided. 1.2 Inclusions This Document applies to the National Index on Agri-Food Performance and any interested party that has been identified as a trusted data provider by the Index. 1.3 Exclusions Other users could benefit from using this Document, as described in Clause 1.2, but are excluded from mandatory requirements. 1.4 Terminology In this Document, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Document; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Document. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
