Description

This Standard Practice was developed by a cooperative effort of representatives of pipe hanger and support manufacturers, based on “best practice” current at this time and on the collective experience of the industry. There is a companion MSS Standard Practice, known as “MSS SP-58”, which relates to pipe hangers and support materials, design, manufacture, selection, application, and installation.

Cable suspension is increasingly being used for mounting building services components in commercial, public sector, and industrial buildings. Prefabricated cable suspensions are an alternative method of suspension which can have many benefits over traditional systems; for example, manufacturer certified load ratings and reduced weight, which itself has many benefits including health and safety, and reduction in embodied Carbon Dioxide (CO2). In addition, cable suspension can provide major advantages of flexible positioning and installation productivity benefits compared to traditional systems.

This Standard Practice seeks to ensure that cable suspension systems used to secure pipe installations are appropriately specified, installed, and maintained such that long-term safety is achieved.
