Description

Preface This is the second edition of CSA C22.2 No. 250.1, Retrofit kits for luminaire conversion , one of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2016. This Standard covers the minimum safety requirements for retrofit kits used to convert existing luminaires, low-voltage luminaires, and commercial refrigeration equipment with an alternate source of illumination, and their installation into the host equipment. This Standard is not intended to evaluate complete luminaires or refrigeration equipment as standalone products. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) scope modifications (see Clause 1); b) restructuring of the Standard into general requirements for all retrofit kits (see Clauses 4to 8); c) simplification of the requirements for fluorescent lamp retrofit kits for luminaires (see Annex B); d) modifications of requirements for induction lamp retrofit kits for luminaires (see Annex C); e) addition of an annex for LED retrofit kits for luminaires (see Annex D); f) addition of an annex for low-voltage luminaire retrofit kits (see Annex E); g) simplification of LED retrofit kits for commercial refrigeration equipment (see Annex F); h) updates in accordance with the Canadian requirements of CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 and CSA C22.2 No. 250.2 (see Clauses 4.2, 5.4, 6.2.2, and 6.4.2); and i) alignment of markings and instructions with U.S. requirements, and updates to French markings (see Clauses 8.2.3, 8.2.4, 8.2.9, and 8.2.10, and Tables 8.1and 8.3). The requirements for retrofit kits and retrofitted luminaires in this Standard supplement the requirements of the products covered by CSA C22.2 No. 250.0, CSA C22.2 No. 250.2, and CSA C22.2 No. 120. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the above standards. This Standard was prepared by the Integrated Committee on Lighting Products, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Consumer and Commercial Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 Application This Standard applies to retrofit kits for use in non-hazardous locations and intended to be installed as a) an alternate source of illumination in previously installed luminaires that already comply with the requirements of CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 or CSA C22.2 No. 250.2; or b) an alternate source of illumination in commercial refrigeration equipment that already complies with the refrigeration equipment requirements of CSA C22.2 No. 120. 1.2 Minimum safety requirements This Standard covers the minimum safety requirements for retrofit kits for luminaires, low-voltage luminaires, and refrigeration equipment, and the supplemental requirements for specific types as follows: a) fluorescent lamp retrofit kits for luminaires, in accordance with Annex B; b) induction lamp retrofit kits for luminaires, in accordance with Annex C; c) LED (light-emitting diode) retrofit kits for luminaires, in accordance with Annex D; d) LED retrofit kits for low-voltage luminaires, in accordance with Annex E; and e) LED retrofit kits for commercial refrigeration equipment, in accordance with Annex F. Note: Retrofitting of a luminaire could involve relocation, removal, or replacement of wiring, reflectors, lampholders, ballasts, and the power supply of the original (or host) equipment. 1.3 Exclusions This Standard does not cover a) conversion lamps that are intended to directly replace existing lamps without modification of the wiring, lampholders, or controlgear within the luminaire (see CSA C22.2 No. 1993); and b) retrofit kits for products other than those identified in Clauses 1.1and 1.2. 1.4 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.5 Units of measurements The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.

It supersedes the previous edition published in 2016. This Standard covers the minimum safety requirements for retrofit kits used to convert existing luminaires, low-voltage luminaires, and commercial refrigeration equipment with an alternate source of illumination, and their installation into the host equipment.
